-With the project entitled “Development of big data-based safety management system for construction worksites using Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)”
Hallym University Student Research Team of Solbi Lee (Senior), Kuhyun Jeong (second year), and Hoyoung Kim (third year) at the Department of Convergence Software were selected to participate in the Undergraduate Research Program (URP) 2017, sponsored by the Ministry of Education and operated by Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity. The Integrated Information & Communications Laboratory that the students belong to has been selected as URP investigator for the second consecutive year.
The Program aims to improve the creative research abilities of undergraduates who major in Science and Engineering, and to give them opportunities to attempt self-directed research. It supports a total of 90 projects related with two sections - ⒜ Intensive major course of Science & Engineering ⒝Creativity & Convergence.
The selected project is about “Development of big data-based safety management system for construction worksites using UAV”, and the Research Team is advised by Dr. Eui-Jik Kim, assistant professor of Hallym University Department of Convergence Software. The research will continue from June through November, and the team will be supported with 9 million won ($8000) in grants.
The students of URP will work on effective safety management systems for large-scale construction using Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), Internet of the Things (IoT), and big data technology that are recently emerging as major attractions, and the team’s work is also expected to lead to a prototype. Through this study, we could reduce the cases of site accidents by location-based real-time monitoring, and save time and money by overcoming the limitations of ‘blind spot detection’ in construction worksites. It could also be applied to various disaster management services in the future, with cloud platform integration.
Dr. Kim said that ‘we can pay lots of attention towards the students who achieved the desired outcome since they have started their preceding research, with interest in big data analytics, development of IoT and sensing devices.’ And he added that ‘URP investigation will be a good motivation for the students’ career since their research would progress to publications and patent application.’
